Jason Reading Landscapes was engaged by Minmi Public School to design and construct a new outdoor play space using a government grant. What was once an underused, sloped area at the back of the school is now a vibrant, natural playground that encourages creative, active, and sensory-rich play for students of all ages.

This project showcases our expertise in both school landscaping design and construction, delivering a space that balances developmental value, safety, and natural beauty.

Client Goals

The school principal reached out to our team with a clear goal: to transform a sloped, unused section of the school grounds into a functional extension of the playground. The vision was to create a versatile, inclusive space that supported a range of activities, from imaginative and developmental play to quiet moments in the shade.

The design brief focused on incorporating risky play elements, natural textures, and passive zones, while ensuring the finished space blended seamlessly into the surrounding landscape and existing school environment.

Challenges and Considerations

As with any live school site, safety and logistics were key. Our team implemented extra safety protocols and site management measures to ensure minimal disruption to school operations, including designated work zones and clear barriers to separate students and staff from active construction areas.

To make the most of the available funding, we also proposed a staged approach, giving the school flexibility to complete the project in phases. Each stage was designed to be self-contained, allowing the play space to be safely used by students, even while other stages were yet to begin. This created a stress-free, adaptable process for the school and ensured maximum value for each dollar spent.

Customised Solutions by Jason Reading Landscapes

After an onsite consultation, our landscape consultant worked closely with the school to develop a tailored solution that met their needs for play, safety, and flexibility. Our team handled both the design and construction phases, including:

  • Site establishment and full excavation works across multiple play zones
  • Installation of natural hardwood steppers, balance logs, and a custom-built bridge
  • Zig-zag log balance beam fixed above ground
  • A dry creek bed using river gravel and mortared borders for safe play
  • Laying of stabilised rhyolite paths and mulched garden beds
  • Custom hardwood edging and rusted steel hardline edging throughout
  • Planting of over 80 native and bush tucker species (locally sourced)
  • Strategic use of steppers, logs, and level changes to support gross motor development
  • A second-stage play area extension including dry creek bed continuation, mulch surfacing, and additional planting

Each element was selected for its durability, natural look, and suitability for school environments, creating a space that inspires movement, exploration, and connection with nature.

Project Impact

The transformation has had a noticeable impact on the school’s daily flow and student wellbeing. A once-unused section of the playground is now a central feature of outdoor playtime, spreading student activity more evenly across the campus and reducing congestion in other areas.

Teachers have also reported an increase in the use of the nearby basketball court, with students naturally gravitating to this revitalised section of the school grounds.

By investing in smart design and natural elements, Minmi Public School has created a space that supports both physical activity and mental wellbeing, and one that students will enjoy for years to come.

“The new project has really positively impacted the school. We have an area of the playground that was out of bounds and out of use, which is now in daily usage, has really opened up the playground and spread the student population across our area much better. It also means the adjacent basketball court is used much more as the kids go out into that area to play.”
