Natural Play Space Design Hamilton North: Bringing a Natural Play Space and Yarning Circle to Life

For a long time, the natural play space design Hamilton North students now enjoy simply didn’t exist. Lunchtime meant the same stretch of mowed grass and a fence line. Nothing to climb. Nothing to gather around. Just an open field doing its best to entertain a few hundred kids at once.

The school’s principal wanted something different, and she’d already seen what that could look like. She’d visited Minmi Public School and watched kids climb over logs and gather in a yarning circle we’d designed and built there. After that, she knew exactly what she wanted for her own students. Not another set of plastic play equipment, but something built from the ground up with real logs, real boulders, and real dirt underfoot.

There was just one catch. The school had secured a government grant toward the project, and the P&C had raised additional funding on top of that. Even so, the full vision was bigger than what that funding could cover in one go. Rather than scale the design down, we designed the whole space as a single concept. We then split construction into stages instead, so the final result would stay exactly as planned. That’s exactly what changed at Hamilton North Public School. This is the story of the natural play space Hamilton North students now run to every lunchtime.

Client Goals for a Natural Play Space in Hamilton North

The school’s principal had a clear picture in mind, and it had nothing to do with a standard playground catalogue. She wanted:

• A natural play area built from logs, boulders and natural materials, somewhere kids could climb, balance and explore rather than just swing and slide
• A yarning circle, giving the whole school a proper outdoor space for gathering, yarning and group learning
• A design that could be delivered in stages to match available funding, without stage one ever feeling like a half finished space in the meantime
• Something safe enough for her students to run straight onto the moment it was finished

The Challenge: Staging the Build and Keeping Students Safe

An empty block is one thing. An active primary school, full of kids every single day, is a very different site to build on.

Because the funding was staged, we had to plan this project as one complete design from day one. We then carefully broke it apart into pieces that could each stand alone. Stage one couldn’t just be a partial job waiting on more money. It had to work as a finished space in its own right, ready for kids to use the moment the fencing came down.

Safety was never an afterthought here. Temporary fencing went up around the entire work area for the whole build, keeping curious students well away from excavation, machinery and materials. We also timed the bulk of construction for the Easter school holidays. As a result, by the time the kids were back running around at lunchtime, we’d already finished most of the heavy work.

Our Natural Play Space Design and Construction Solutions

This is the natural play space design Hamilton North has been waiting for. Students now explore it every single day. You’ll find a dry creek bed winding through sandstone and river rock. Hardwood logs sit at different heights for climbing and balance, and a circle of ironbark seating waits beneath the trees. Nothing about it looks manufactured. That was the whole point.

Underneath that natural feel sits real construction work:

• Site establishment, including temporary fencing, rubbish removal and toilet hire for the duration of works
• Initial excavation to prepare the site for construction
• Over 82 linear metres of Shapescaper Redcor steel edging, supplied by 4 Seasons Landscape Supplies, to define the natural play area
• A dry creek bed built from sandstone ballast and river rock, bordered and set in a mortar mix
• Four natural boulders placed through the play area, up to 500mm in diameter
• Hardwood log steppers set in concrete at varying heights, for climbing and balance
• Raw hardwood log features and a hardwood log balance beam, built to different heights for a range of ages and abilities
• Pine bark mulch spread across the full natural play area
• A dedicated yarning circle, built from ironbark and hardwood log seating set around a stabilised rhyolite base

As both designer and builder on this project, our team carried it from that first concept sketch through to construction ourselves. It’s the same approach the school’s principal had already seen work at Minmi. That’s exactly why she trusted us to bring the same result to her own students.

Project Impact

These days, the natural play space Hamilton North relies on for lunchtime looks a little different. Kids balance their way across log steppers and duck through the dry creek bed. Meanwhile, lessons that used to happen indoors now happen in the yarning circle instead. What used to be an empty field is now the part of the school grounds everyone wants to be in.

For our team, this is what natural play is really about. Not more equipment, just more imagination, a bit more challenge, and a genuine connection to the kind of materials kids don’t usually get to climb on.

Stage one is finished, and we can’t wait to come back for stage two.
