How to Build a Strong and Lasting Treated Pine Retaining Wall
In this video, Jason walks you through the fundamentals of constructing a durable Treated Pine retaining wall. From timber selection to post spacing and drainage, every detail matters when building a wall that will stand the test of time.
Choose the Right Timber
The backbone of any solid retaining wall is the material. For timber walls, we use H4 grade Treated Pine—specifically designed for in-ground use and resistant to rot and termites.
Structural Tips for Long-Term Stability
- Post Depth and Spacing: Posts must be installed deep enough and at regular intervals to handle soil pressure effectively.
- Back Grading: Leaning the wall slightly backwards into the soil adds to the wall’s long-term structural integrity.
Drainage Is Critical
Poor drainage is one of the main reasons retaining walls fail. We follow industry best practices using:
- Geofabric: Prevents soil from clogging drainage material.
- Ag Pipe: Redirects water away from the wall’s base.
- Drainage Gravel: Ensures proper water flow and reduces hydrostatic pressure.
Aesthetic and Functional
While timber retaining walls bring a warm, natural look to a garden, they also need to be built to code. Our approach ensures that your wall looks great and performs exceptionally for years to come.
